Adventures, nature, and the slow pace of island life — all within minutes of Gecko House
Beaches
Local tip: Besides our private beach, there are four beaches found below that are only a few minutes from Gecko House and are known for their uncrowded, "Old Florida" feel - far less busy than beaches in Sarasota or Naples. Arrive early for the best shell and shark tooth hunting. The other two beaches — Venice Beach and Siesta Key Beach — are both unique and worth the drive.
Blind Pass Beach (also called Blind Pass Park) is a quieter beach known for shelling, fishing, and nature. Amenities typically include a parking area, public beach access, restrooms, outdoor showers/rinse stations, picnic tables, fishing areas near the pass, kayak/paddleboard launch opportunities, and walking access to both the Gulf beach and the bay side. It is especially popular for shell collecting, birdwatching, fishing, and dolphin and manatee viewing. Compared with Englewood Beach, it is less developed and has a more natural, Old Florida feel.
📍 Manasota Key · ~5 min
The beach faces due west over the Gulf, making it an excellent sunset-watching location. There is a large parking area with restrooms and showers. Walking from your car to the beach is very easy — you avoid a long walk from your car to the Beach. This beach is best for families who want amenities close at hand. There are five restaurants that you can walk to in four minutes or less from the beach — the Beachcomber, the Lock 'N Key, the Sandbar Tiki and Grille, the Waverly Restaurant & Bar, and the White Elephant Pub.
📍 Manasota Key · ~5 min
Manasota Beach is a quiet, "Old Florida" gem at the northern end of the Key — free parking, lifeguards, restrooms, outdoor showers, picnic shelters with grills, a boat ramp, and a kayak/canoe launch. It's a favorite for shark tooth hunting, shelling, fishing, and birdwatching, with nature trails winding through the dunes and connecting to Lemon Bay. Quieter than Englewood Beach, with a more laid-back, local feel.
📍 Manasota Key · ~5 min
Siesta Key Beach is known for its 99% quartz-crystal sand which stays cool underfoot on hot summer days. The sand is exceptionally fine and powdery. Ranked as one of the best beaches in the United States and the world — a must-visit during your stay on the Gulf Coast. Siesta Key Beach has about 950 parking spaces. However, the main shopping, dining, and entertainment district (called Siesta Key Village or The Village) has very limited parking. They do have paid parking if you can't find a spot.
📍 Siesta Key · ~55 min
At the southern tip of the Key — one of the most beautiful and least-developed beaches in Southwest Florida. Nature trails, mangroves, and pristine Gulf shoreline. Accessible by foot or boat. Many local beachcombers consider Stump Pass Beach State Park one of the best shelling spots in the Englewood/Manasota Key area. The park's location at the southern tip of Manasota Key acts like a natural collection point where currents deposit shells and fossilized shark teeth. Parking is extremely limited — you can park your car at Englewood Beach and walk about ten to fifteen minutes to get to the Park if no spots are available.

Shark tooth hunting is what Venice is most famous for. In fact, Venice is often called the "Shark Tooth Capital of the World." When prehistoric sharks died, their teeth fossilized in the seabed. Waves, currents, and storms uncover the fossils and wash them onto the beaches. Beginners should walk along the waterline and look for dark shell beds or shell piles. You can pick through the shell piles by hand. Many visitors find their first shark tooth within 15 to 30 minutes.

Boca Grande is a very exclusive beach town located on Gasparilla Island. This town is unique for its Old Florida elegance, lack of high-rises, use of golf carts rather than cars for travel, and historic downtown. Some of the past and current Boca Grande residents include George H.W. Bush, Katharine Hepburn, Tom Brokaw, Nick Saban, Dabo Swinney, and Tucker Carlson. One final note — there is very limited parking on the island since the residents began prohibiting parking on all side streets of the Island. Check out the two lighthouses on Boca Grande - the Port Boca Grande Lighthouse (which is not even a lighthouse) and the Gasparilla Island Lighthouse (which was moved from Delaware in 1927).

This island is one of Florida's most beautiful barrier islands, located off the southwest coast of Florida near Fort Myers. It is famous for its relaxed atmosphere, white-sand beaches, wildlife, and world-class shelling. Since the island runs east-west (very unusual for Florida barrier islands), the Gulf deposits huge numbers of seashells on its beaches. Hunt for seashells at Bowman's Beach, Blind Pass, or Lighthouse Beach. Nearly one-half of the island is protected conservation land. The J.N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge is home to hundreds of bird species, manatees, and alligators, and has extensive mangroves throughout the island. Rent a bike there and explore more than 20 miles of bike paths or watch the sunset over the Gulf of Mexico.

Besides the world-famous Siesta Beach, Sarasota has a beautiful shopping and dining district called St. Armand's Circle. They also have amazing natural attractions such as the Marie Selby Botanical Gardens and the Myakka River State Park. If you have time, check out the Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium and Sarasota Jungle Gardens (where you can actually walk among the pink flamingoes).

The Peace River near Arcadia is one of the best fossil-hunting locations in Florida. In fact, it is often better than Venice Beach because you are searching in fossil-rich gravel deposits versus just walking the shoreline. Many visitors find dozens of shark teeth in a single outing, with some lucky hunters uncovering megalodon teeth. The tour operator Fossil Junkies offers guided fossil-hunting adventures on the Peace River. If you aren't interested in fossil hunting, Arcadia has an antique district with many shops to visit, where you can spend your afternoon.

The best hunting areas are Venice Beach, Venice Fishing Pier, Caspersen Beach, and beaches south of the Venice Jetty, including Manasota Key. The best times to hunt are early morning before others arrive, low tide, and after a storm, when waves uncover new fossils. These conditions often produce the best finds.
We supply kayaks, paddles, and life vests so you can see Lemon Bay up close. Simply walk down to our dock and select a kayak from the stand to the left of the dock. Check out the shoreline and the mangroves that make Lemon Bay a true aquatic preserve!
Sunset Dolphins and Charter Cruises operates sunset cruises, dolphin cruises, and boat tours from the dock adjacent to the Sandbar Tiki and Grille on Manasota Key, just south of the roundabout with the shell in the center of the circle. Once you pass the roundabout, look for the Fish and Bait Shop sign — they are the business next door to the shop on the right as you are leaving the Key. The father-son team is highly knowledgeable about the mangroves and the Lemon Bay Aquifer. They are also experts in finding multiple dolphins by Stump Pass Beach State Park. You will encounter dolphins feeding along mangrove shorelines, as well as manatees during the warmer water months.
